Factors To Dunking A Basketball

While most other skills can be learned and executed by almost anyone, the slam dunk is only completed by a select few individuals.  There are many other factors to dunking a basketball than just practicing and perfecting the technique.

The first essential factor is size.  Alexander “spud” Webb is the smallest player to ever win a slam dunk contest.  Spud was 5’7” when he played and wowed crowds all over the U.S. He is one of two individuals under six feet to ever win a slam dunk contest.

The other one, Nate Robinson, was trained by Spud.  Fact is that even if you aren’t over 6 feet, you can still work on your vertical to the point that you’ll be able to dunk.

The second factor in how to dunk a basketball is vertical leap.  In order to reach the basket, you must have a decent vertical leap.

Anything over 30 inches is generally considered a pretty good vertical leap.  If your vertical leap is insufficient, that is the first thing to work on.

When you get a decent vertical leap, the next thing to work on is ball control. Ball control is essential in dunking because is difficult to maintain control of the ball on the way up to the basket.  The best way to practice ball control is to practice difficult dribbling techniques which hone your ball handling skills.

Along with ball handling skills the vertical leap must be improved as mentioned previously.  The way to make a large improvement on the vertical leap is by exercising.

There are two different exercises that greatly improve the vertical leap.  One is wall jumps.  Stand by a wall, slightly squat, jump straight up and touch the wall as high as you can.  Try to touch higher every time and do this continuously.

The next way to make a large improvement is to improve your leg strength.  Two ways to do this are free weight squats and leg press.  Both of these use a great deal of leg strength and will improve your power and explosiveness.
